About

Welcome to my corner of Victorian Literature.

I’m Irene Ashcroft, and I write historical fiction steeped in elegance, mystery, and the quiet rebellions that shape lives in unexpected ways. My debut novel, The Ledger, draws inspiration from the timeless wit of Jane Austen and the atmospheric intrigue of Wilkie Collins, weaving a story of secrets hidden in the ledgers of Victorian society.

From an early age, I was fascinated by the lives that history leaves in the margins — the unnamed figures in records, the fleeting mentions in newspapers, the details that never make the official accounts. That fascination became the foundation for my storytelling.

When I’m not writing, I can usually be found paging through old books, exploring historic towns, or piecing together fragments of the past in archives and libraries. Every setting I write is grounded in careful research, but it’s the human spirit — our ambitions, flaws, and hidden desires — that brings each page to life.

This space is not just about my writing, but about celebrating the worlds that inspire it. Here you’ll find updates on new projects, glimpses into the history behind the fiction, and reflections on the themes that continue to resonate across centuries.

Thank you for stepping into the shadows with me.

The Ledger is available soon in print and Kindle. I invite you to join my newsletter for exclusive behind-the-scenes content, early chapters, and the occasional scandalous tidbit from Victorian Bath.
